Meet Global Climate Change

  • Emissions like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and other greenhouses gases will remain in the atmosphere for years making impossible to eliminate global warming for several decades

  • The temperature in the U.S. has increased by 2 degrees in the last 50 years and precipitation has increased by 5%

  • Since 1870, global sea levels have risen by about 8 inches

  • By 2040 the Arctic is expected to have a completely ice free summer, or even earlier

  •  More than 1 million species have become extinct due to disappearing habitats, acidic oceans, and more all due to global warming

  • 37% of Americans believe that global warming is a hoax, and 64% don't believe that climate change will seriously affect their way of life

Carbon Footprint

You can find out things such as your carbon footprint with online quizzes such as the one below. More detailed quizes exist, but this is a good way to see where you stand (no pun intended).

1. Eat fruits and veggies that are in season

Eating seasonally and regionally as much as possible means that the food you consume will travel fewer miles to get to your plate.

2. Don't waste food

Growing, processing, and transporting food all use fossil-fuel energy; because of this, greenhouse gases are emitted into the atmosphere. When we waste food, we are in essence wasting energy and contributing to climate change.

3. Stop eating so much meat and cheese

The raising and slaughtering of cattle, goats, sheep, and bison (ruminant animals) releases the most greenhouse gas emissions by far. Ruminants have a unique digestive system that constantly generates methane, a greenhouse gas that’s 20 to 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Meat is also associated with greenhouse emissions due to the production of crops used for feed, their dependence on water, and major land use.

"Global warming is not a conqueror to kneel before - but a challenge to rise to. A challenge we must rise to."

Questions for my Capstone:
  1. Why are humans allowing their actions to interefere so much with our earth and our ecosystems?

  2. Are people willing to make changes in their lifestyle in order to save our planet?

  3. How much stress are we putting on our earth, and in what ways are we applying that stress?
